Waste Audit Report
On Tuesday 18th of November, Room 20 did a Waste Audit. A waste audit is when a group of people get together and try to sort out what kinds of things we are throwing away. Before we started the process we collected all the rubbish from the day before and weighed it. Then we tipped all of the rubbish on to a piece of tarpaulin. When we have done that, we start putting the rubbish into the categories we have layed out. For example compostable paper, recyclable plastic and more. To help us, we had a lady from the Auckland City Council, her name was Nicky Elmore.
When we throw out rubbish, to some of us it is like throwing money away, but for others it’s just a piece of rubbish. Some of the rubbish we are throwing away can be recycled, like paper that we have used on both sides and boxes. Things like that can be used on projects like recycled dinosaurs or other things. At Owairaka Primary School we are throwing away 34.3kg of waste that should have been diverted. That can make a lot of difference in the world and New Zealand.
Here are some of my ideas that you can also use to make a difference in the world. The first most important thing is to always separate rubbish that can be recycled and cannot be recycled. Then the second most important thing is to try and recycle more rubbish than you use to. Then the third most important idea is to try and reuse things as many times as you can.
I think we can do better with our rubbish. We can divert much more rubbish from going to the landfills where it will create methane gas.
